Introduction

NHS Lothian Maternity Services provide services for women, birthing people, their partners and families. We want people to feel cared for, listened to and in safe hands.

Maternity services provide medical, physical and emotional care for women, babies and families. This is during pregnancy, birth and the first 6 weeks after birth.

Maternity services have been getting attention. This is because of the Government’s promise to improve maternity care.

We have found areas that need to be improved. This will make care better and safer. NHS Lothian knows this information may worry families who are using our services.

Since 2022 our Maternity and Neonatal Improvement Programme has made services better and reduced harm. We use advice, information and guidance.

Neonatal is the first 28 days of a baby’s life.

We want to share information about our Programme with people who use our services.

We listened to women, families, staff. We learnt from our data. This will help make changes so care is safer and better.

Our Programme covers 5 main areas of maternity and neonatal care.
