Who will be involved in my care?

Here is an idea of some of the types of staff you may have contact with during your pregnancy and childbirth and after your baby is born. This will vary according to your needs.

Midwife

Your midwife is your main care provider and is an expert in low risk pregnancy and childbirth and provides care before, during and after your baby is born.

Maternity Care Assistant

Maternity care assistants assist the midwifery team in caring for you during and after labour.

Obstetrician

The obstetrician is a doctor who is an expert in complicated pregnancies and works in partnership with midwives and GPs.

Sonographer

The sonographer an allied health professional with special training in the use of ultrasound equipment for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes

Physiotherapist

Physiotherapists help people through movement and exercise, manual therapy, education and advice.

Health Visitor

A health visitor is a qualified nurse (or midwife) who has completed specialist training in children and family health. They offer support and advice regarding the wellbeing of your child until the school years. Your health visitor will meet you before you have your baby. GP

The GP provides general medical services and may share your care with the midwife before or after birth.  In some areas, the GP may see a woman a few times during her pregnancy. Ask your midwife for more information.

Neonatal Nurse

This is a specialist nurse who provides care with additional health care needs who are admitted to a neonatal unit.

Neonatologist

This is a specialist doctor who provides medical care in a neonatal unit.

Family Nurse

This is a specialist nurse who provides midwifery care through the Family Nurse Partnership to mothers under 20 years.
