Midwifery and medical students NHS Lothian maternity units and teaching hospitals support midwifery and medical students from Edinburgh’s universities. They work closely with the midwifery and medical teams, always under supervision, to provide care to you during labour and birth. When you are being cared for in hospital and giving birth, you may be asked whether a student(s) can be present. You may wish to consider how you feel about this in your birth plan – you will always be asked for consent.
