Creating a relaxing atmosphere can make you feel more comfortable whilst you are in labour. It also helps the hormones required for birth to work more effectively. You are very welcome to make your birthing space your own – you can move the equipment around to create space, and can bring cushions, blankets, LED candles and other personal items from home if you would like. You can also play music through your phone or speakers if you’d like to.
Aromatherapy is offered by both the Birth Centre and Labour Wards, and you can bring in your own should you wish. This can be used via a diffuser or massage, and works effectively with breathing techniques, for example hypnobirthing.
We recommend that you keep your energy levels up during labour. Toast and diluted juice are available when you are in labour in the hospital, but you are also welcome to bring your own snacks and drinks, although please note we do not have facilities to store or reheat any food. Full meals are provided for you on the antenatal and postnatal wards. Unfortunately, we cannot provide any refreshments for your birth partner so they may wish to bring their own.
Keeping as upright and active as possible during labour can be very beneficial, both in helping you manage any pain you may have and in helping your labour to progress. Walking, dancing, swaying and squatting are all encouraged. You can also make use of birthing balls, peanut balls, birthing mats, the multi-position bed and the birth pool or bath to help you be mobile and to try different positions. Your midwife can offer advice on what you could try, or you can take a look at this link for some examples: Positions for labour and birth.pdf (nct.org.uk).opens a new window
