Edinburgh Community Stroke Service (ECSS)

The Edinburgh Community Stroke Service (ECSS) provides person-centred, family-orientated rehabilitation and support for people recovering from stroke in the Edinburgh area, and is delivered through Edinburgh Community Rehabilitation and Support Services.

The specialist multidisciplinary stroke rehabilitation service is based in a rehabilitation centre in the city of Edinburgh (contact details below). Provision of rehabilitation by stroke-specialist occupational therapists,  physiotherapists and speech and language therapists supported by rehabilitation co-workers, neuro-psychologists, a consultant rehabilitation specialist physician and an employment advisor. Can be delivered to individuals: newly diagnosed stroke patients or those in need of re-assessment after an earlier stroke. Intensity of rehabilitation is usually weekly attendance at the rehabilitation centre.

Staff are trained in delivering an asset based approach, and clients have access to supported self-management programmes.

Referral is made through Social Care Direct on 0131 200 2324. There is no prescribed end point to the intervention. Initial assessment is usually by home visit and multidisciplinary intervention can be delivered on a domiciliary basis if more appropriate.  Transport can be arranged to bring individuals to the rehabilitation centre if they are unable to self-travel.

Please note this service has moved to new premises (May 2016) – no longer at Craighall and Firrhill:
