Stonemason Medicals

Silicosis (formerly known as Stonemason’s Disease) is an inflammation of the lung caused by inhaling small particles of silica. Stonemasons therefore are at risk due to their work exposing them to the fine dust produced when working with stone.

The effect on the lungs from inhaling silica dust is inflammation and should that exposure continue, the lungs may thicken and scar tissue will be formed. This then obstructs the flow of oxygen into the lungs and into the bloodstream. This is irreversible.

There is a statutory duty on employers of Stonemasons exposed to silica dust to provide health surveillance.
