The natural background radiation in the atmosphere is something that we are all exposed to and most of us at some point will be exposed to more through having an x-ray. However, in some workplaces and professions the potential for exposure to radiation is far higher, i.e. in the nuclear industry, medical and dental facilities and some manufacturing or engineering processes. This exposure needs therefore to be monitored and controlled.
