Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome

Excessive use of vibrating tools can lead to a variety of conditions in the hands and arms, generically described as HAVS – Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome. HAVS can be painful and cannot be cured, it can however be prevented.

The Health & Safety Executive recommends that employees exposed to the use of vibrating tools are regularly checked. We do this initially by questionnaire, asking them questions to determine whether or not they may have any symptoms of Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome. Once identified, they may then require an assessment by a qualified Occupational Health Physician or Nurse. It may then be required that the employee’s exposure to vibrating tools is reduced or that working practices are changed. Our qualified Occupational Health Staff will be able to advise on any such actions if deemed necessary.
