First Aid Instructions Following a Sharp or Contamination Incidents
- Gently encourage bleeding at the wound site, ideally holding it under running water.
- Wash the wound using plenty of soap and running water, Do not use bleach.
- Also clean small wounds with antiseptic such as alcohol-based rub as this is effective against viruses.
- Do not suck or scrub the wound whilst washing it.
- Dry the wound and cover it with a waterproof plaster or dressing.
- Bites that break the skin may require antibiotic treatment – have assessment by a medical practitioner.
- In the case of mucous membrane exposure, irrigate copiously with water or normal saline.
- If contact lens are worn, wash the eyes with water or normal saline both before and after removing the lenses.
- If irrigating the mouth, do not swallow the water.
