Louise Taylor, Departmental Lead, is an RGN with extensive experience in cardiovascular care and education, ranging from preventative research to cardiology and cardiac rehabilitation. With responsibility for this self funding service within NHS Lothian, Louise works with a team of highly skilled clinicians and administrators to ensure that all patient self-management programmes, facilitated by clinicians nationally/internationally, are evidence based, equitable, safe, quality assured and aligned with the training we provide. Louise has been instrumental in this NHS department’s strategic expansion into other conditions such as Cancer; digital options of the heart manual and more recently a heart failure programme in collaboration with colleagues in England. She has a BSc Hons in Social Science from Queens University Belfast; a postgraduate teaching diploma and MSc in Professional Education and is a member of management, public and clinical committees. Dr Carolyn Deighan, Heart Manual Health Psychologist

Dr Carolyn Deighan C Psychol, MA (Hons), MSc, DHealthPsych, is a Health Psychologist with a specific interest in cardiac health and cancer. Since 2009 she has led the psychological input to the resources within the Heart Manual department, NHS Lothian and the clinician training to enable this nationally and internationally. Her collaborative work includes the intervention development and its associated training within REACH-HF (Rehabilitation Enablement in Chronic Heart Failure) a NIHR funded study; Principal Investigator with Edinburgh University in the Digital Heart Manual (D-HM) evaluation funded by ELHF (Edinburgh and Lothians Health Foundation);co-design of the education and coaching in a telehealth system for Heart Failure patients in an EU commission funded multi site study in the UK and Europe; and Cancer Manual training and development with NHS colleagues in cancer care. Carolyn supervises the psychology staff in the department to provide ongoing service evaluation, analysis and dissemination. She was engaged in the digitalisation of the Cancer Manual (D-CM). Carolyn is part of the Heart Manual Management Board. She served as Honorary Secretary for British Association for Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation (BACPR). She was a lead in the 2023 BACPR Standards and Core components review and writing group and now chairs the BACPR Psychological Working Group. Carolyn is available to discuss any ideas and questions you may have to support professionals and patients in the optimal use of all our programmes.
Kaitlyn Young, Heart Manual Specialist Therapist

Kaitlyn Young (MSc PT, MSc SESM, BSc Kin Hons) joined the Heart Manual as a Specialist Practitioner in October 2023. With a background in Kinesiology, Kaitlyn brings experience as an Exercise Physiologist from her work in Canada. Her academic journey led her to Glasgow in 2015, where she pursued research and earned an MSc in Sport and Exercise Science and Medicine from the University of Glasgow, followed by an MSc in Physiotherapy from Glasgow Caledonian University. Kaitlyn’s professional experience lies in Cardiac Rehabilitation, having served as a Cardiac Rehabilitation Physiotherapist within NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde. Her passion for clinical research led her to the completion of further post graduate training in clinical research methods, population health research, and health promotion. Excited to be part of the Heart Manual Team, Kaitlyn aims to contribute to the robust evidence base of the Heart Manual. Her focus on collaborating with clinical users to enhance patient care within home-based cardiac rehabilitation programs
Sharon Cameron, Heart Manual Specialist Practitioner

Sharon Cameron joined the Heart Manual Department in March 2019 as a Specialist Practitioner, responsible for the delivery of the Heart Manual clinical training day. Sharon is an RGN, with a BSc(Hons) in Nursing Studies, and has completed various post graduate studies in the areas including health promotion. With an extensive clinical career in acute medical nursing, clinical research and management, Sharon has a keen interest in research and education, particularly, in the continuous professional development of staff and the delivery of quality patient care. She is delighted to join the Heart Manual Team, to build on the strong existing evidence base of the Heart Manual and work with clinical users to deliver the best possible care for patients opting for home based cardiac rehabilitation. As a Heart Manual trainer she is always keen to hear your feedback and is available to answer any questions.
Emma Parr, Heart Manual Assistant Psychologist

Emma Parr (M.SC., B.Sc., Hons) joined the Heart Manual department as an assistant psychologist in August 2023. She previously studied at Nottingham Trent University obtaining a B.Sc. (Hons) in Psychology with Criminology and has recently completed a M.Sc. in Mental Health in Children and Young People: Psychological Approaches at the University of Edinburgh. She also currently works part-time as a support worker for young people at Positive Paths in Edinburgh. Emma assists with service evaluations, clinical audits and research projects, while also supporting Heart Manual and REACH-HF training.

Originally I was employed over 20 years ago after completing a Pharmaceutical Technician Course, when my role was to co-ordinate the dissemination of the Heart Manual; however since then l have worked on the Stroke Workbook and associated training. I liaise closely with our design/printing company, and co-ordinate the stock control and delivery of manuals throughout the UK and internationally. I thoroughly enjoy advising, existing and new customers regarding purchasing the manual and as such like to think of myself as a good ambassador for the Heart Manual Department. I also have a small HR role as I have responsibility for keeping internal systems updated regarding statutory/work conditions for the team. Finally I live in Edinburgh beside Holyrood Park where I walk my beloved spaniel, Charlie and am very interested in the role dogs have to play in relieving anxiety and depression in people.

Having worked for the Heart Manual for the past 20 years, initially as Administration Assistant and now a Heart Manual Administrator, I coordinate training courses and assist with all aspects of the day to day running of the department. I am passionate about my role and being part of an extensive team who provide educational training and support for healthcare professionals to ultimately help patients. I have had the opportunity to work with a large range of medical health professionals from both the UK and abroad and have witnessed the growth of the Heart Manual and associated products over the years. I feel very strongly about the long term benefits gained from these which is reflected in the numerous positive feedback comments received from patients, making it all worthwhile for me.
