“What are the differences between continuing on long term azithromycin compared to stopping it in patients living with bronchiectasis”

The study is run from Newcastle University by Prof DeSoyza but there are sites all around the UK helping, including NHS Lothian.

Who can participate?
Patients aged 16 years old and over with clinically stable bronchiectasis and prescribed prophylactic azithromycin or an equivalent long-term macrolide for at least 90 days in the past 12 months due to reduce the risk of bronchiectasis exacerbations

What does the study involve?

In this study, patients will continue taking azithromycin or switch to a placebo for 12 months. The dosage will match what they were already taking, which could be 250mg once a day three times a week, 500mg once a day three times a week, or 250mg once a day every day. The medication will be taken orally.

Commercial Bronchiectasis studies:

We participate as a site in many UK and worldwide commercial bronchiectasis studies. We work with many coomercial drug and device companies.

Often these studies recruit only 2-3 patients at each study site and inclusion criteria is very niche. Our experienced research and clinical team will be best placed to identify suitable patients and inform them of the opportunity to participate in these studies.

Current commercial studies include new tablet, inhaled, nebuilsed and intravenous drug infusion treatments for bronchiectasis.
