I have been diagnosed with bronchiectasis – yet I’m only in my 20’s. I thought this would be an old person’s condition
It is more common in older people – but it can affect people of any age. The basic messages on treatment and living with bronchiectasis are the same irrespective of age. Treatment plans which are specific to your circumstances are the key.
Will my bronchiectasis shorten my lifespan?
In mild bronchiectasis there is no shortage of life expectancy. In very severe bronchiectasis, however, some patients die at a younger age because of their lung disease.
We are aware there are factors that can affect a person’s likelihood of either being admitted to hospital or of dying at a younger age. We can calculate that likelihood using a scoring system such as the Bronchiectasis Severity Index (BSI) which is based on several factors such as age, lung function and specific bacteria – click here for more information. However it should be noted that this is a very generalised tool and each individual will vary significantly. You can discuss your health and individual risk factors further in the clinic.
