Where to go
Preoperative Assessment is located on the ground floor of the hospital. From the main entrance follow the corridor straight ahead, past the shop and cafe, turn left at the end and then first right, Preoperative Assessment is through the door straight ahead.
Purpose of your appointment
This appointment is necessary to ensure that you are fully prepared for your surgery, given your current health and medical background. The aim is to ensure that you are fully prepared for your surgery. There is no need for you to fast and you should take all your medication as normal.
Please note that if you do not attend this appointment your operation may not go ahead as planned.
What happens at your appointment
You will be seen by one of the Preoperative Assessment Nurses who will go through several detailed questionnaires with you. The nurse will document your medical conditions, medication, allergies, symptoms, lifestyle choices and social circumstances. They will also explain what will happen on the day of your operation, when to fast, which medications to take or omit and answer any questions you may have.
You should allow up to 2 hours for this appointment. Please bring all your prescribed medicines in their original packaging or dosette box if possible. If you need reading glasses, please ensure you bring them in with you.
Some people may be asked to see an Anaesthetist on the same day or on another day.
What to do if something changes between your POA appointment and your operation
If anything changes related to your physical or mental health after you have been seen (for example you become unwell or are diagnosed with a new condition or change your medication) please contact the clinic on 01506 524070.
