Footwear tips for common situations

At home

Many foot injuries happen indoors. Avoid walking barefoot, especially on hard floors. Supportive slippers with a firm sole are recommended.

At work

If your job involves standing for long periods, cushioned, supportive footwear makes a significant difference. Safety footwear should still meet the fitting guidelines above.

For exercise

Activity-specific footwear is important. Running shoes, walking shoes and cross-trainers are designed differently. Replace sports footwear regularly — most shoes lose significant cushioning after 300–500 miles of use.

As you age

Feet change shape over time. Have your feet measured regularly, as the size and width you wore in your 30s may no longer be accurate. Wider-fitting styles and shoes with fastenings become increasingly important.
