For some patients, it may be possible to plan treatment in a way that preserves fertility. This depends on the type of cancer, its stage and grade, and individual circumstances.
Fertility-sparing options are not suitable for everyone, but where they are safe and appropriate, they will be discussed with you in detail.
When fertility-sparing treatment may be considered
Fertility-sparing approaches are most commonly considered in:
- Early-stage cervical cancer, where limited surgery may be possible
- Selected early-stage endometrial cancers, often using hormonal treatment rather than immediate surgery
- Certain ovarian cancers, where one ovary can be preserved in carefully selected cases
The decision to pursue fertility-sparing treatment is made by the specialist multidisciplinary team and discussed carefully with you, balancing cancer safety with fertility goals.
What fertility-sparing treatment might involve
Depending on the cancer type and situation, this may include:
- Limited surgical procedures rather than removal of the uterus
- Preservation of one ovary where safe
- Use of hormonal treatment with close monitoring in selected cases
These approaches require careful follow-up, and in many cases, completion surgery is recommended once family-building is complete.
Support and decision-making
If fertility preservation is important to you:
- Please raise this early with your clinical team
- We can involve fertility specialists where appropriate
- You will be given time and support to consider your options
Not all patients will choose fertility-sparing treatment, even when it is possible, and there is no right or wrong decision. Your preferences and priorities are central to the discussion.
A note on research
Some fertility-sparing approaches are offered as part of research studies. If this is relevant, your team will discuss this with you. Participation is always voluntary and does not affect your standard care.
