  • Homecare delivery of your medication
  • Frequently asked questions
  • Important contact details

Introduction

Biologic medicines are treatments aimed at reducing inflammation and improve symptoms arising from the autoimmune inflammatory arthritis and other conditions. They are used when other treatments have not worked or have caused side effects.

You may be starting a biologic medicine, changing to a different medicine following your rheumatology consultation. You may indeed be doing well on the drug and continuing with it.

How will I receive my medicine?

Your biologic medicine will be prescribed by the Rheumatology Department and supplied through a Homecare delivery service.

The Homecare company will contact you to arrange delivery of your medication to your home at a convenient time.

This applies to both self-injected biologic medicines and biologic tablets.

Important information while taking a biologic medicine

If you develop an infection

If you develop an infection and are prescribed antibiotics, do not take your biologic medicine until the infection has improved and you have completed your antibiotics, unless your rheumatology team advises otherwise.

If you are having surgery

You may need to stop your biologic medicine before an operation and restart it afterwards. Please contact your GP/surgeon/dentist or rheumatology team for advice.

If you have side effects

If you experience any side effects or have concerns about your medication, please contact the Rheumatology Department for advice.

If you stop taking your medicine

If you decide to stop taking your biologic medicine, please let the Rheumatology Department know. We can discuss your concerns and advise you on your treatment.
