Exercise and Work

Exercise

Exercise is great for your overall lung health and should be encouraged in patients with bronchiectasis. Exercise can also help to loosen off any sputum in your chest and make it easier to clear. You may find this is when you are most productive.

It is important to pace yourself so plan activities ahead and allow recovery time where it is needed. If you are new to exercise then start slowly and build up gradually.  Asthma and Lung UK have some easy to follow exercise routines. It is okay to be breathless when exercising, this is completely normal. Being breathless however still able to speak is a good indicator are working at the correct level.

Work

Most people with bronchiectasis are able to continue working without issue.

If you feel work is becoming challenging then you may have an occupational health department that can offer advice, support and adaptations.

If you work in a company with 250 or fewer employees or are self employed, Working Health Services Scotland can offer advice and support on work related matters, and have access to services including physiotherapy, occupational therapy and counselling.
