Living with Bronchiectasis

Bronchiectasis Self Management Front Cover (1)

Is there a cure for bronchiectasis?

No – But there are  effective treatments.

Is bronchiectasis progressive i.e. Does it get worse over time?

Yes – but the rate of progression can be greatly reduced by treatment which is tailored to your own circumstances.  A huge amount is down to the individual. Follow the self-management plan in conjunction with advice from the GP and hospital team.

Can I tell how fast my bronchiectasis is progressing?

The clinic reviews will be able to help with this. Those with mild bronchiectasis might be looked after their GP, having been given appropriate management advice from the bronchiectasis clinic.   Those with more severe bronchiectasis will tend to be seen at 6-12 month intervals at the clinic and a range of tests may be carried out.  These tests will assess the progression of your bronchiectasis and may lead to changes in your treatment plan.  Ask about this progression when you see the clinic doctor.

Are new treatments for bronchiectasis becoming available?

Yes, it is an exciting time for bronchiectasis research with new understanding and some new medications being tested so that they can be made available in the future. All our hospital sites in NHS Lothian are actively involved in research with different studies happening all the time. You can get information on some studies in the Section on Research.  Not all studies are suitable for all patients but please speak to your doctor or nurse if you are interested in being involved, or contact the research team directly. The programme continues, however, like all research the rate of progress is largely determined by the availability of funds.
