Physiotherapy plays a key part in the treatment and management of bronchiectasis. When you cough and clear sputum you are likely only clearing the sputum high up in the chest. Chest clearance exercises will allow you to access the sputum further down in the lungs, where sputum can get trapped and lead to infection. A physiotherapist will teach you the most appropriate method to clear your chest, which in turn should reduce your risk of infections.
The advice and exercises you are given should then be continued by yourself independently, and become part of your daily routine. Your physiotherapist will tell you how often to complete your exercises however twice a day is a good starting point. During times of infection, chest clearance exercises should be completed more regularly throughout the day.

It is also important to keep well hydrated in order to make the sputum easier to clear. Try drinking at regular intervals throughout the day – water is best.
