Understanding your hearing test results

Your hearing test results are recorded in an Audiogram, which is a graphical representation of your hearing ability.

The image below shows a typical audiogram for a person with an age related high frequency hearing loss. The right ear is represented by the red circles and the left ear by the blue crosses. Each point recorded on an audiogram represents the lowest level that a person can hear at a specific pitch.

Down the left side of the graph there are descriptors indicating the level of hearing loss, from normal to profound. The numbers down the left side represent volume measured in decibels (dB).

As you go from left to right across the audiogram the sound goes from low pitch (such as bass sound) to high pitch (such as a mouse squeak). The different pitches, or frequencies, are measured in Hz or KHz.

Satisfactory hearing is represented by points on the audiogram at a level of 20 dB or quieter.
