Vision Screening / Orthoptics

Who are we?

Orthoptists specialise in the diagnosis and non-surgical management of eye movement and vision problems.

  • Routinely orthoptists help to treat:
  • squints (strabismus)
  • lazy eyes (amblyopia)
  • double vision (diplopia).

We are specialists assessing vision of all ages and monitoring their visual development.

We manage amblyopia (lazy eye) through the use of glasses and occlusion therapy, commonly in the form of eye patch treatment using adhesive or fabric patches, or eye drop treatment as an option when appropriate.

We also provide Lothian wide Orthoptic Vision Screening for all children of pre-school age prior to starting Primary One.
For more information see our Pre-school Orthoptic Vision Screening page.

In adult patients we offer help with double vision (diplopia) caused by any misalignment of the eyes or where there are difficulties with the eyes working together as a pair.

We have several techniques to help manage double vision such as prisms and eye exercises.

Who do we see?

Orthoptists see people of all ages.

Where do we work?

We are mainly based on two sites across Lothian; Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion and St. Johns Hospital with clinics at the Royal Hospital for Children and Young People and Department of Clinical Neurosciences in Edinburgh.

Who do we work with?

We work closely with Consultant Ophthalmologists and Hospital Optometrists and therefore you or your child may also see a member of this staff group at your appointment.
