Mood and Adjustment

Being diagnosed and living with a neurological condition can be difficult. Coming to terms with this and adapting to changes can be hard. Some common difficulties experienced by people living with a neurological condition can include:

  • Low mood or depression
  • Worry or anxiety
  • Frustration, irritation or anger
  • Fatigue or sleep problems
  • Relationship difficulties

It can sometimes be challenging to know what you can do to make things better. Many people adapt as they learn more about their own condition and make changes to their life. However, sometimes difficulties can persist and interfere with your day-to-day life. At these times, it can be helpful to seek advice and support.

The neuropsychology service offers time-limited psychological therapy to support people who are experiencing difficulties with adjusting to their condition. You can be referred to our services via your GP or by other health professionals working with you.

“My clinician listened to me and helped me to understand what I was thinking and feeling was normal.”

“Therapy gave me the confidence to take control. It has transformed my treatment.”

If you are experiencing suicidal thoughts and feel in crisis then please seek help immediately by contacting your GP or NHS 111.

If you live in Edinburgh, you can also contact the Mental Health Assessment Service (MHAS) on 0131 537 6000(*). This is available 24-hours a day.

Services such as Samaritans and Breathing Space are also available 24-hours a day and provide confidential emotional support.
