- When standing from chair, ensure that your feet are placed flat on the floor, hip width apart, and as close to the chair as possible before you attempt to stand. This will ensure that you a stable base for standing. If you normally use a walking aids such as a zimmer, 4-wheeled or 3-wheeled walker, ensure that this is placed in front of you (with brakes on) to offer a support when you stand
- Low/deep seats can be difficult to get up from so consider placing additional cushions under seat cushion and also addition cushions at your back
- If you have access to a rise/recliner chair ensure that chair is at lowest height when getting into chair, and consider raising chair to help facilitate sit to stand when standing up from chair
- Getting up from an armchair will be easier than a sofa given that it provides two armrests to push up from. Consider sitting on a dining room chair if struggling to get up from soft armchair/sofa
- If you use a wheelchair and the arms are removable, consider a sliding transfer between your bed and wheelchair to reduce risk of falls and to conserve your energy.
