I’m struggling to get on/off my bed

  • Consider placing an armchair or bedside cabinet next to the side of the bed you get in/out of to offer you something to grab onto when moving from lying to sitting, and/or to help you push up from the bed
  • If struggling to move from lying to sitting, trying rolling onto your side, swing your legs off the bed, then use your elbows to push yourself up into a sitting position
  • When standing from bed, ensure that your feet are placed flat on the floor, hip width apart, and as close to the bed as possible before you attempt to stand.  This will ensure that you a stable base for standing.    If you normally use a walking aids such as a zimmer, 4-wheeled or 3-wheeled walker, ensure that this is placed in front of you (with brakes on) to offer a support when you stand
  • If you have access to an electric bed which is height adjustable, ensure that bed is at lowest height when getting into bed, and consider raising bed to help facilitate sit to stand when standing up from bed
  • If  you use  a wheelchair and the arms are removable, consider a sliding transfer between your bed and wheelchair to reduce risk of falls and to conserve your energy
