How can I become a Practice Nurse?

For staff who are interested in becoming a Practice Nurse there is a programme delivered across Lothian which is quality assured as part of education delivered by the Lothian Education team.
This course runs annually and takes just under the year to complete. There are masterclasses on subjects relevant to practice nursing and an OSCE exam as part of the course. There are also opportunities to complete other courses within the year to consolidate learning. e.g. cervical screening. There are different options for practice placements and training positions are also a possibility.
For further information/discussion please contact:

Once you have started the practice nurse course it is possible to apply for practice nurse positions that are advertised within recruitment. There are many opportunities within primary care. NES also offer a training course for practice nursing. Details can be found on Twitter or on the NES website. NES GPN Pathway

How can I access courses?
NHS Lothian welcomes you to our updated GP Practice Nurse Website. General Practice Nurses can access any training and development opportunities provided by NHS Lothian.
We also have a twitter account which is@nhslgp
As you know we have a robust training department and a team who manage all education in General Practice. In order to support GP Practice training we ask that application forms for staff e.g. Practice Nurses and Reception staff, go through the generic application mailbox. In order to make this as smooth as possible the Education team have introduced a closing date on all courses, which will provide the administration team with time to commission and book spaces for Practice Nurses and Healthcare Support Workers in General Practice.

Please see course flyers and catalogue below for current education sessions.
