Pulmonary Rehabilitation Service

Who we are? What we do?

We are a team of physiotherapists and occupational therapists who specialise in the treatment and management of chronic lung conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, bronchiectasis or pulmonary fibrosis.

We support you to manage your breathlessness, chronic cough and fatigue through a programme of exercise designed specifically for you, taking into account how your symptoms and any other health conditions affect your daily activity. Pulmonary rehabilitation can help if you have recently been discharged from hospital, had a flare-up of your lung condition or feel your symptoms have been gradually getting worse.

Pulmonary rehabilitation programmes run weekly for 6 weeks and you can choose which day and time you would prefer to attend. Each session is supervised by a member of the pulmonary rehab team.

Where are we based?

Pulmonary Rehabilitation runs in 8 hospital and community venues across Lothian – you can choose which site is most convenient for you. See the The Pulmonary Rehabilitation Programme for more information.

How to Access?

You can be referred to pulmonary rehabilitation by any health professional eg your GP, practice nurse, hospital consultant, pharmacist.

How long will you Wait?

  • Urgent referrals – up to 4 weeks
  • Routine referrals  – 10-12 weeks

Your first appointment? What to expect?

You will be offered a 1:1 appointment with one of the team to discuss your breathing problems, how these impact daily activities and how you would like your symptoms to improve. This usually lasts about 90 minutes and also involves checking your blood pressure, oxygen levels, any medication you are taking and how much physical activity you are able to do.
