Edinburgh Community Stroke Service

Who we are? What we do?

ECSS (Edinburgh Community Stroke Service) is a multidisciplinary service provided by Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, an Employment and Training Advisor and Community Support Workers for stroke specific rehabilitation and support within the community based on individual rehabilitation need and goals.

ECSS can provide rehabilitation input once a week, which can be either Community and/or Centre based. The service is flexible and personalised, providing both 1:1 or group input as appropriate and incorporating health promotion and self-management strategies. The service also has close links with other agencies including Speech and Language Therapists, Assistive Technology Occupational Therapy, Chest, Heart & Stroke Nurses, Consultant in rehabilitative medicine, Neuropsychology, Grapevine (welfare checking service) and other statutory/voluntary services.

Door-to-door transport may be available if independent travel is not possible.

How to Access?

Referrals can be made through Social Care Direct via hospital therapists, consultants, CHSS nurses, GPs or self-referral via Social Care Direct.

How long will you wait?

Current waiting list time is approximately 4 weeks. We are able to prioritise referrals based on rehabilitation need.

Your first appointment? What to expect?

On receipt of your referral you will be sent a letter stating our current expected waiting list time and what to expect. A therapist will contact you once an appointment is available to make a visit to your home to discuss your needs. This visit will last up to one hour and will explain what ECSS can offer and the next steps.
