Ear Reconstruction & Atresia Service NHS Lothian | Our Services

Child Service

This page is designed to explain how our service works for children. We are a team of specialist healthcare professionals based in Edinburgh, dedicated to providing support, advice and solutions to children whose ears are small (microtia), misshapen or don’t hear properly due to a lack of ear canal (atresia).

If you have a child born with microtia or atresia, the first thing we would plan to do is to meet with you to discuss what this means and to answer any questions you might have.

We understand that travelling to Edinburgh might be a challenge for you so you may also have the option of attending one of our outreach clinics in Glasgow or Dundee if more convenient.

One of the things that might be discussed is the option of having a surgical procedure. To either change how the ear looks or to improve how your child hears.

Most of our operations take place at our children’s hospital in Edinburgh. However, some of our hearing implant operations are performed at St John’s Hospital in Livingston, just outside Edinburgh.

If your child decides to have their ear reconstructed, they will be required to spend time on Dunvegan Ward until they are well enough to go home.
Your child will likely be placed in a 4 bedded bay with a fold down bed for one parent. Single bedded side rooms are available but usually reserved for children who are most at risk.
