This development opportunity is open for Registered Nurses and Team Leads or others who lead teams in Care Homes and Care at Homes Services.
The aim of the programme is for Nurses and Team Leads to develop skills in their role to promote and inspire interdisciplinary teams to enhance the quality of Person-Centred Care within the Care Setting.
Structure of Development Programme:
The programme consists of two full day in-person sessions
Day One:
- Building a Healthful Culture
- Realistic and Compassionate Care
Day Two:
- Managing Risk Safely
- Responding and Coordinating Care Needs and Environment/Delegation
- Recognising and Escalating Deterioration

Sessions are delivered by NHS Lothian Clinical Education Team
Both sessions are held at Comely Bank Centre from 0900-1600 (registration at 0845).
Participants are expected to attend both days
DAY ONE
Building a Healthful Culture
Healthful cultures are communities where individuals feel supported and valued, can work collaboratively to create a safe environment for learning and working in which all individuals can flourish.
Healthful cultures enhance wellbeing of both residents and staff members.

Aim:
Develop understanding of the importance of healthful cultures in care settings and their impact on staff, as well as residents, wellbeing
Intended Learning Outcomes:
- Review understanding of person-centred ways of working.
- Explore personhood and identity.
- Investigate the value of inclusive communities.
- Discuss the importance of collaborative practice
Leading Realistic and Compassionate Care
Aim:
Increase knowledge and skills to enable your team to deliver realistic compassionate care
Intended Learning Outcomes:
- Develop an understanding of how to support staff and residents through their life journey
- Describe realistic compassionate care and how this related to trauma informed practice
- Demonstrate an understanding of compassionate care in relation to frailty and dementia
- Describe key features of end of life care and future care planning

DAY TWO
Managing Risk Safely

Aim:
Develop an understanding of the joint role of the leaders in risk intervention assessment and planning.
Intended Learning Outcomes:
- Utilise leadership and communication strategies to maintain a safe environment and manage incidents when they happen
- Describe the role of the TL and RN in risk intervention assessment and planning
- Recognise and enable a whole team approach to risk management
Enable a culture of safety whilst maintaining resident quality of life
Responding and Coordinating Care Needs and Environment –Delegation
Aim:
To build upon current understanding, confidence and accountability in the safe delegation of care and to ensure tasks are assigned appropriately in line with professional standards
Intended Learning Outcomes
- Define delegation and explain its importance in delivering safe and effective care
- Identify roles and responsibilities of the delegator and the person receiving delegated tasks
- Recognise accountability and professional boundaries when delegating and accepting delegated care
- Apply the 5 principles of safe delegation
Identify potential risks and challenges associated with delegation and describe how to manage or escalate concerns

Recognising and Escalating Deterioration

Aim:
To support staff to recognise and respond appropriately to adverse changes in a resident’s condition
Intended Learning Outcomes:
- Be competent to escalate concerns using SBAR-D
- Have awareness of when to assess residents and the importance of recognising soft signs
- Acquire knowledge of performing A-E assessment, inc. related documentation
