Voice disorders are a range of conditions which affect the voice box (larynx). They may cause changes to the voice or complete loss of voice. Speech and language therapists (SLTs) have an important role in assessing, treating, managing and preventing voice disorders. SLTs work closely with Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Doctors, GPs and other professionals to help improve voice disorders. Referrals for voice therapy are only accepted following examination by Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) with a detailed report based on nasendoscopy examination.
Speech and language therapists (SLTs) also have a key role to play in trans health care. Trans people may not have a voice disorder but may seek help to explore or make changes to their voice and communication congruent with their sense of self.
