Integrated Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Service NHS Lothian | Our Services

The Team

The NHS Lothian Integrated Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Service team includes Physiotherapists, Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioners, Advanced Practice Podiatrists, Orthopaedic Consultants, Radiologists and administrative staff. Other groups may also contribute to your care, if required.

If you require further help with your foot or ankle symptoms you will be referred to the appropriate service.

Orthopaedics

Your GP may refer you to Orthopaedics. Referrals are reviewed by the Orthopaedic team and often it is felt that the best place to start the management of your symptoms is within the Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioner Clinics.

Any investigations or surgical opinions can be organised through the Advanced Physiotherapy/Podiatry Practitioner Clinics if required.

If required you will be referred to meet a member of the Orthopaedic team for a consultation.

Advanced Physiotherapy and Podiatry Practitioners

Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioner

Some people will see one of our Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioners. They are specialist physiotherapists who can arrange investigations if required and work closely with Orthopaedic Consultants. Very few people with foot or ankle pain require an operation.

Advanced Podiatry Practitioner

Some people will see one of our Advanced Podiatry Practitioners. They are specialist podiatrists who can arrange investigations if required and work closely with Orthopaedic Consultants. Very few people with foot or ankle pain require an operation.

What will your appointment involve?

Your appointment will be around 30 minutes. This will initially involve a discussion to gain an understanding of your symptoms followed by a physical examination. You may be required to partially undress so that your foot and ankle can be examined. You are welcome to bring a friend or family member along with you or we can arrange a chaperone, if requested.

The findings of the assessment will be discussed with you and your treatment and management options will be decided jointly with you.

Investigations are not always necessary; however, if these are required they can be arranged through the Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioner clinic.
