SPINE RELATED LEG PAIN (SCIATICA)
Sciatica is an umbrella term that’s often used to describe pain that can be felt in the leg, caused by irritation or compression of a nerve in the back. Only 8-10% of back related problems are thought to be truly nerve related. Pain from sensitive muscles and joints of the back and hip can also cause leg pain. If in doubt, get it checked out! What exercise is best?
There is no strong evidence to suggest that any one type of treatment or exercise is best. As with most aches and pains, regular exercise for flexibility, strength and general fitness are recommended. Aerobic exercise, or anything that gets you out of breath, can be helpful if you have nerve pain. Try to find something that you can tolerate and enjoy. Examples include a walking programme, swimming, gym or a rehabilitation programme offered by a health professional.
