School Nursing NHS Lothian | Our Services

For young people

Your school nurse is here to help you feel happy and healthy. They can help in lots of ways.

Three kids running on grass while playing with a football.

You might think the school nurse only gives jags , but school nursing is very different now.  One of the big changes is that they can help you if you are feeling worried or unhappy, as they understand that mental wellbeing is as important as physical health.

If anything is keeping you from being happy and healthy, doing well in school or feeling safe, your school nurse is one person you can talk to.

What services are still  offered to all school aged children to support everyone’s health?

  • height and weight measurements
  •  jags/immunisations (done now by our Community Vaccination Team of nurses)
  • community or high school drop ins for advice on things like sexual health

What are the new focus areas of the school nursing role – to support people going through difficult points in their life?

  • Emotional Health and Wellbeing
  • Substance Misuse
  • Child Protection
  • Domestic Abuse
  • Looked after children
  • Homelessness
  • Youth Justice
  • Young Carers
  • Sexual Health
  • Transitions

If you have any questions about how you get these services, you can talk to your teacher, guidance teacher, parent of carer, G.P, or just pop into a drop in if your school has one.

If you are feeling low or afraid, you are not alone and there is help for you.
