The Rivers Team

The Rivers Centre multi-disciplinary team consists of a range of professionals including clinical and counselling psychologists, cognitive behavioural therapists, psychiatrists, art therapists and specialist link workers. All our staff are registered with and abide by the ethical guidelines of their respective professional bodies.

Clinicians

Claire Fyvie, MA, MSc, PhD CPsychol

Consultant Clinical Psychologist

Dr Fyvie qualified as a clinical psychologist in 1988. She spent her early career working for a number of NGOs in developing countries, but became involved in the field of traumatic stress in the wake of the Piper Alpha disaster. Responding to the growing demand in the NHS for specialist trauma treatment, she co-founded the Rivers Centre with Chris Freeman in 1997. Claire has been Head of Service at the Centre since that time.  

Gill Moreton, BA, CQSW
Lead Clinician for External Contracts
Cognitive Behavioural Therapist

Ms Moreton began her professional career as a child and family social worker, specialising in child protection and working closely with colleagues from the police. In 1996 she was involved in the immediate response to the shootings at Dunblane Primary School and in the establishment of the Support Centre where she worked for the next five years providing a practical and therapeutic service to the families, community and professionals affected by the incident. Since then she has specialised in the treatment of children and adults affected by trauma. Gill joined the Rivers Centre in June 2002.

Katharine Logan, MB ChB, MRCGP, MRCPsych, MPhil
Consultant Psychiatrist / Psychotherapist

Dr Logan completed general practice training before entering psychiatry and training in psychotherapy (CBT. She is a BABCP accredited therapist and recently completed Level 3 EMDR training.  She has worked at the Rivers Centre since 1998 and was appointed a Consultant Psychiatrist / Psychotherapist in 2004.  Her interests include maximising outcome by employing a combination of psychological, pharmacological and psychosocial approaches and the treatment of complex cases with co-morbidity. She enjoys lecturing and supervising and has participated in several multi-centre trials.

Paula Easton, DClinPsychol, MA
Acting Head of Service

Dr Easton first joined the Rivers Centre as a psychology assistant in 1999 when she was involved in both clinical and research work. She worked on the initial stages of the literature review and consultation regarding the model of Psychological First Aid and was on the organising committee for the European Conference on Traumatic Stress in 2001. Paula began the post graduate clinical psychology training course at the University of Edinburgh in 2001 and following qualification in 2004 she returned to work at the Rivers Centre.

Heather Hillen
Cognitive Behavioural Therapist

Heather worked with drug users in the Harm Reduction Team for 8 years and through supporting this vulnerable client group developed an interest in working with trauma. She completed her Post Graduate Diploma in CBT in 2007 and joined the Rivers Centre team in 2008. She is a fully trained EMDR therapist and is also trained in IPT. She continues to have a particular interest in working with adults who have a co-morbid drug or alcohol problem and a trauma reaction.

Lize Van-Niekerk
Counselling Psychologist

Lize originally worked with the South African Police Service for five years before coming to the UK in 2003. Since then she has worked with Occupational Health services, specializing in traumatic stress reactions, work-related stress and common mental health problems. Lize has been at the Rivers Centre for ten years now, providing clinical services to NHS clients and to our emergency service contractors.

Sarah Phillips, MSc, BSc, PG Dip
Counselling Psychologist

Sarah has worked in the NHS for nearly 20 years, mainly within the field of learning disability. Her core therapeutic training is in CBT, Systemic and Psychodynamic approaches. She is also a fully trained EMDR therapist, in the use of both the adult and child and adolescent protocols. Sarah has a special interest in Autism Spectrum Disorders and is helping the Rivers Centre to adapt its services for people with these difficulties.  

Jackie Thomas, MA, MPhil, Dip Clin Psychol
Clinical Psychologist

Jackie qualified as a clinical psychologist in 1994 and since then has worked in a variety of specialist services, including a prison and medium secure forensic unit, a community drug team and a neuropsychology service. She joined the Rivers Centre in 2015 and has developed a special interest in Compassion Focused Therapy and its use for people affected by trauma. 

Simon Marshall
Principal Arts Therapist

Simon is an Art Psychotherapist and visual artist, and oversees treatments at the Rivers Centre involving the Arts Therapies and Arts in Health. He has worked in the NHS for 10 years mainly in the field of Learning Disabilities. He is also trained in Mentalization Based Treatment (MBT). He works with patients with complex trauma symptoms for whom a more creative form of accessing thoughts, emotions and relationships is helpful in their integrated trauma recovery. He is interested in the influence of attachment patterns on relational functioning in trauma presentation.
