Clinical Services

Our therapeutic approach

Our approach is to work openly and collaboratively to develop a joint understanding of the problems you face.

We base our work on up-to-date research and treatment methods in the field of psychological trauma, and we specialise in the use of trauma-focused treatments in line with the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines (2005).

How to access our services

Referrals

A referral is required for adults living in Lothian who are aged 18 years or over.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

If you think you might be suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) following a single traumatic event, then please ask your GP to consider a direct referral to the Rivers Centre.

Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD)

For the treatment of more complicated trauma reactions such as Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD) arising from the consequences of multiple or sustained traumatic experiences such as childhood mistreatment, then please ask your GP to consider referring you to your local mental health team in the first instance.

Confidentiality

Our clinical work is confidential, but we will ask your consent to liaise with your GP and other professionals involved in your care.

We may involve partners or family members in therapy, if you feel comfortable with this.
