Our therapeutic approach
Our approach is to work openly and collaboratively to develop a joint understanding of the problems you face. We work using a variety and combination of approaches that have been shown to have good clinical effect in treating those affected by complex developmental trauma. These include approaches such as Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, EMDR, Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, and Compassion Focused Therapy.
We base our work on up-to-date research and treatment methods in the field of psychological trauma, and we specialise in the use of trauma-focused treatments in line with the National Institute of Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines (2005).
How to access our services
Clinical Referrals
All referrals for trauma-based difficulties whether in response to single events or to multiple or sustained traumas, including mental health problems such as PTSD, Complex PTSD and other clinical presentations consequent to complex trauma, should be directed to the local mental health team in the first instance.
There is currently no direct referral route to Rivers. Cases will be taken on by Rivers following triage by the local mental health team. The Rivers team would typically work with those most affected by complex developmental trauma where it is felt that psychological treatment is indicated and likely to be of help.
Clinical Consultation Requests
The Rivers Centre offers individual, and where resource allows, group clinical case consultation spaces for NHS staff working with those affected by trauma. Requests for case consultations can be made through contacting the service directly either by telephone or email.
Confidentiality
Our clinical work is confidential, but we will ask your consent to liaise with your GP and other professionals involved in your care.
We may involve partners or family members in therapy, if you feel comfortable with this.
