Toileting

Family and Child

Every child is different; they learn to walk and talk at different times and they learn how to use the toilet at different times too.

Making the transition from wearing a nappy to using the toilet can be a frustrating challenge, especially if you are also feeling pressurised to begin the process before your infant is ready.

Starting toilet training at a time when there are no other big changes happening for the family and approaching it in a patient and calm manner can give your infant the best chance to learn their new skill without other distractions.

Talk to your infant before you start toilet training so they understand there is going to be a new, grown-up way of going to the toilet.

Fit going to the toilet into your infant’s daily routine, as well as giving regular reminders throughout the day and give lots of encouragement and praise and for trying.

Learning this new skill can take days, weeks or even months. Be patient and if it isn’t going well try not to worry. Leave it for another month and try again.

The Eric (The children’s bowel & bladder charity) website has some great tips for potty training as well as other toileting worries. It also has a section designed specifically for children.
