Dr Peter Foley

Consultant Neurologist | Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer

PhD, MRCPUK

Biography

Peter’s clinical training was in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dundee. He is a Consultant Neurologist with NHS Lothian. He has a particular interest in symptoms, treatment of symptoms, and palliative aspects of care in neurological disorders. Peter completed a PhD at the University of Edinburgh focusing on neuropathic pain in multiple sclerosis (MS). During his PhD he led a clinical and neuroimaging study of patients with relapsing remitting MS, who were affected by neuropathic pain, in collaboration with the University of Oxford. The study used advanced MRI imaging and other methods to examine links between the brain’s own pain-modulating mechanisms, and cognition.

Peter works as a Consultant Neurologist in NHS Lothian Department of Clinical Neuroscience (DCN). Roles include the multiple sclerosis (MS) service and Huntington’s Disease (HD) service, as well as general neurology and acute/on-call neurology. He organises a Scottish Neurology Registrar training day focused on palliative care.
