Neonatal Unit NHS Lothian | Our Services

How do I start

Continuing breast feeding

Breastfeeding a baby in the neonatal unit does take time but as your baby matures and becomes stronger, you will come to understand your baby’s abilities and work with your baby to establish successful feeding. Being realistic from the beginning about how long it can take will help you cope when you feel it is all going too slowly and you want your baby home.

Whilst we all aim to have babies successfully breastfeeding before discharge, it is not a pre-requisite for discharge and some babies go home with a combination of breast feeding and tube feeding or breast feeding and bottle feeding. The nursing and medical staff will work with you to achieve the best feeding solution for you and your baby.
