On entering the Western General Hospital at Porterfield Road, proceed through the entrance of the Outpatients Building and walk along the North Corridor at ground floor level to the far end. How can I get referred to physiotherapy?
We accept referrals for patients aged 16 and above from two main sources:
- GP referral (Musculoskeletal physiotherapy referrals are accepted from EH3 5-, EH3 6-, EH3 7-, EH4 1-, EH4 2-, EH4 3- and EH5 2- postcodes. Hand therapy, rheumatology and hydrotherapy referrals differ.)
- Consultant/ hospital referral
What to expect
From your 1st appointment: Depending on your problem/ injury your first appointment will either be on the telephone or face to face. The appointment may last 30-45 minutre. At your appointment you will have an opportunity to discuss your problem and goals with a physiotherapist and it will usually involve a physical assessment.
Face to Face appointments: Please bring a list of your medications with you and any forms or questionnaires you have been asked to complete. You may be asked to bring shorts and/ or a vest top so the physiotherapist can assess you.
Phone appointments: You will be asked to confirm your telephone number when you book your first physiotherapy appointment. At your appointment time a physiotherapist will call you to either complete an initial assessment or a follow up consultation.

What if I cannot attend my appointment?
- Missed appointments will result in a longer wait to be seen. If you cannot attend your physiotherapy appointment, please contact us as soon as possible
- Contact telephone number: 0131 537 1288
- If you do not attend an agreed appointment and have not informed the physiotherapy department of this in advance you will be removed from the waiting list. If you contact the physiotherapy department within 4 weeks of this missed appointment you may be re-added to the waiting list. If more than 4 weeks has passed then you will need to be referred again by your GP.
