The Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh is a major acute teaching hospital located in the Edinburgh BioQuarter at Little France. Outpatient Department 5 (OPD5) is located on the ground floor of the hospital accessible adjacent to the East Entrance.

How can I get referred into Physiotherapy?
OPD5 do not accept self referrals/ GP referrals. Referrals to OPD5 are accepted via hospital consultants, orthopaedic clinics and fracture clinics.
What to expect from your appointment?
1st Appointment: The main aim of the first appointment is for the physiotherapist to gather a detailed understanding of the problems the patient presents with. The appointment may last 30-45 minutes. The physiotherapist will ask general health questions and specific questions about your problem to help build an accurate picture to develop an appropriate treatment plan.
Follow up appointments: Follow up appointments are either face to face, phone or via video (link sent via email), mutually agreed between patient and physiotherapist and dependent on your progress. Please bring a list of your medications with you and any forms or questionnaires you have been asked to complete.

What to wear
During your physiotherapy assessment and treatment you may be required to remove your outer clothing (coats, scarf etc.) to allow the physiotherapist to fully assess your problem. If you are referred for assessment of a back or leg problem, please bring a pair of shorts or loose trousers. For a neck or shoulder problem, a vest top if you prefer.
During your appointment
You may be seen by either a male or female physiotherapist, if you have a specific preference please contact us prior to your appointment to arrange this. Similarly if you would like a chaperone present during your examination, please contact us in advance to arrange this.
What if I cannot attend my appointment?
Missed appointments may result in a longer wait to be seen. If you cannot attend your physiotherapy appointment, please contact us as soon as possible. Please leave a message on the answering machine if there is no answer.
If you do not attend an agreed appointment and have not informed the physiotherapy department of this in advance, you will be removed from the waiting list. If you contact the physiotherapy department within 4 weeks of this missed appointment you may be re-added to the waiting list.
