Teaching & Research

Teaching & Training

We are a university teaching hospital for: University of Edinburgh, Queen Margaret University and Napier University.  We often have medical, nursing, physiotherapy and occupational therapy students in our wards and clinics that are here to learn about medical care for older people.

We will invite patients to help us with teaching.  This is always with your consent and does not affect the treatment you receive in the department.

We can also host overseas or elective students wishing to observe clinical practice in our department.

Research

We support a growing number of observational and interventional research studies.   Dr Gordon Duncan, Dr Sarah Keir and Dr Rachael Murphy all hold honorary university appointments and are active in clinical research.  They are growing the recruitment for local, portfolio and industry studies for stroke, dementia, Parkinson’s and sarcopenia as well as developing the next generation of clinical researchers.

Each year, clinical researchers from the department have published publications and delivered presentations to a variety of national and international audiences.
