Medical Physics

Welcome to Medical Physics within NHS Lothian. The department is based at the Royal Infirmary, St John’s and the Western General Hospitals, from which Medical Physics staff provide an area service to Lothian and Fife. Within the University Hospitals Division of Lothian Health, Medical Physics has close links with Oncology Physics staff and with Medical Physics in the University of Edinburgh.

The role of physicists and engineers in the NHS is to facilitate the introduction of new clinical technology and scientific methods into healthcare and to ensure their safe and effective use. Medical physics staff have a wide variety of scientific and technical expertise: there are electronic engineers, physicists, computer scientists, a range of technical staff including mechanical workshop technicians, and administrative staff.

The spectrum of medical physics work ranges from basic first-line servicing of medical equipment to leading major research projects backed by national funding bodies.

Our department is divided into four sections that specialise in different areas of physics and engineering applied to medicine: Imaging Physics; Medical Equipment Management; Nuclear Medicine Physics; & Radiation Protection.
