**NEW** IPC Guidelines for Gastrointestinal and Repiratory Infection

Please view the information below from NHS Antimicrobial Resistance and Healthcare Associated Infection (ARHAI) team in Scotland.

All documents related to this have been updated on the Outbreaks: Prevention, testing and management of common illnesses and infections page and in the Care Home Outbreak Box resource – both on this NHS Lothian Care Homes website.

“As part of the 2025/2026 annual planned CHIPC programme, ARHAI Scotland have updated and published online both the Care Home Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) for Gastro-intestinal illness and Care Home Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Resource for Respiratory illness resources.

There were minor changes to both documents following review none of which impact resident care.

As you are all aware ARHAI Scotland are currently developing Transmission Based Precautions recommendations for practice. It is likely that ‘droplet transmission’ and ‘airborne transmission’ will be replaced with new definitions to describe respiratory transmission. This will mean changes throughout the CHIPC Manual and associated resources to update the terminology including the addition of resources to support any guidance changes.

We will continue to communicate updates to the CHIPC Manual associated resources content to stakeholders via the Care Home IPC Oversight and Advisory Group in addition to the news section of the National IPC Manual.”

Use of the CHIPC Manual and associated resources online is always advised to ensure access to up-to-date guidance.
