Isn’t an Artificial Eye shaped like a Ball?

Eyeball Close-Up

A common misconception is that an Artificial Eye will be a spherical globe.

Wrong! An artificial eye is never a round ball! Hollywood and the motion-picture special-effects industry have a lot to do with perpetuating this myth.

In recent times for example, the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean‘ film franchise features a character Ragetti, played by actor Mackenzie Crook, who wears a wooden artificial eye (he dreams of being able to afford a glass one!) which has a tendency to pop out and roll around the deck of the pirate ship for comic effect.

In truth a typical artificial eye is actually much flatter, is more of an oval type of shape and does not “pop” out, being held securely in by the eyelids.
