During your consultation, your GP may recommend or request an x-ray to investigate your symptoms or help with a diagnosis.
Your GP will place these requests electronically but, as the patient, you have to arrange the appointment yourself. This currently means phoning the relevant X-ray department to arrange an appointment.
When the GP makes the x-ray request, you should take the following steps:
- Make a copy of your CHI number (community health index) – this is how we electronically identify patients in NHS Scotland.
- Find out which X-ray department the GP is making the request to and call the relevant number (options listed below).
- Ask your GP when the earliest is you can call the hospital (this allows time for the request to be placed and processed; usually at least one working day).
- Unless your GP advises otherwise, you must phone to arrange the appointment within 30 days (otherwise the request is out of date).
When you come for your x-ray, we ask that you follow this advice:
- Do not arrive before your appointment time, as you will not be allowed access to the department in advance.
- Please attend alone (unless you require additional support).
- Do not attend if you have any symptoms of Coronavirus infection as per Government advice to help protect others.
