NHS Lothian Ophthalmology

Ophthalmology is a medical specialty that provides specialist care for the treatment and management of diseases and conditions affecting the eye and eyesight. In Lothian, services are delivered out of our specialist eye hospital in central Edinburgh, Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion (PAEP), and St John’s Hospital in West Lothian.

Our Services

Ophthalmology is the highest volume acute service delivered across Lothian, providing 130,000 patient contacts each year, of which 100,000 are delivered out of The Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion. The Eye Pavilion offers a specially equipped consulting rooms, three operating theatres, two wards for inpatients and day cases, and an acute referral clinic for emergency care related to the eye.
