The Memory Assessment & Treatment Service (MATS) is an outpatient clinic, comprised of community mental health nurses, admin staff, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, psychiatrists and neurologists. There are close links with clinical research and third sector partners, such as Alzheimer Scotland.
We understand that waiting for an assessment of memory can feel overwhelming. While you wait, there are excellent sources of help and advice available. Dementia UK’s Admiral Nurses offer free, specialist support for anyone affected by memory problems or awaiting an assessment of memory. You can:
- Call the Admiral Nurse Dementia Helpline on 0800 888 6678 (Mon–Fri 9am–9pm; Sat–Sun 9am–5pm) for expert advice and emotional support
- Email the team at helpline@dementiauk.org
- Book a free appointment with an Admiral Nurse at a Nationwide branch in Edinburgh for tailored, face-to-face guidance
- Access virtual clinics or find more information via www.dementiauk.org
These services can provide practical advice, emotional support, and help you feel more in control while you wait for your assessment.
MATS is a non-urgent service, designed to assess patients aged 65+ who present with cognitive decline. The aim is for early diagnosis and intervention. Where assessment results in a diagnosis of dementia, MATS serves to initiate and monitor newly commenced relevant medication. Onward referrals and signposting seek to ensure post-diagnostic support is facilitated; this is most often via an Alzheimer Scotland Link Worker.
The service covers the city of Edinburgh only. Patients must be able to attend clinic, and with someone able to support assessment, such as a close family member. Please note that MATS cannot make home visits.
