The aim of the service is to help acute services deliver care to people who use or inject drugs, who are at high risk of harm – including drug related death.
A range of interventions may be available, including:
- Initiation of Opioid Substitution Therapy / Medication Assisted Treatment in carefully selected patients
- Advice on management of withdrawal in the hospital setting
- For some patients who take a patient directed discharge we can provide or refer to appropriate assertive outreach services
- Liaison with community substance use teams
- Facilitation of early follow-up
- Naloxone training and take-home kits for patients
- Harm reduction advice.
