IUI is one of the most simple and least invasive of fertility treatments. It involves placing prepared sperm into the uterus using a fine catheter, close to the time of ovulation. The procedure usually takes 5 to 10 minutes. IUI can be used with Partner (IUI-P) or Donor (DI) sperm. Donor sperm will be provided by an unknown donor from the Edinburgh Sperm Bank or other alternative HFEA compliant sperm bank.
IUI treatment is usually suitable for:
- Women with at least one normal, healthy fallopian tube (to allow the sperm and ovulated egg to meet for fertilization to occur).
- Couples who have problems with sex, such as impotence, premature ejaculation, vaginismus, etc.
- Women with cervical mucus problems which may prevent sperm from entering the uterus.
- Women with mild/minimal endometriosis.
- Women in same sex relationships having treatment with donor sperm.
- Single women having treatment with donor sperm.
